ROSA® Knee Robotic Technology

At The Bone & Joint Center, we are committed to providing exceptional joint care to make you stronger. That's why our dedicated joint replacement experts proudly offer knee replacement using the ROSA Knee System so that you can get back to enjoying an active, healthy lifestyle.

What Is ROSA Knee?

ROSA Knee is a robotic surgical assistant that is designed to help joint replacement surgeons perform total knee replacement with greater precision and a higher standard of care. It uses a camera as well as optical trackers that are attached to the patient's leg to know the exact position of the knee during surgery. This not only helps surgeons carry out their surgical plans accurately but also helps them to precisely place the knee implant.

Who Can Benefit From the ROSA Knee System?

While total knee replacement performed with ROSA Knee robotic technology can provide patients with a multitude of benefits, it is typically recommended for patients meeting specific criteria as well as patients who:

  • Are experiencing severe knee pain
  • Can't accomplish everyday tasks due to joint-related knee pain
  • Have arthritis, osteoarthritis, or cartilage damage
  • Have tried all applicable nonsurgical treatment options, such as physical therapy or anti-inflammatory medication

To determine if you are a good candidate for knee replacement surgery utilizing the ROSA Knee System, your orthopaedic surgeon will perform a thorough assessment. Your doctor will also ask you questions about the knee pain you are experiencing and how it is impacting your life.

What to Expect

Before Surgery
Once knee replacement surgery with robotic assistance has been determined to be the right surgical procedure for you, your joint replacement surgeon will go over the procedure as well as explain the recovery process. Your provider will also answer any questions you may have about your knee replacement, the implant, or the robotic system.

Additionally, during the preoperative phase, your surgeon may order a series of X-rays of your knee. These X-rays will allow your surgeon to create a 3D model of your knee, which will be used to plan out your knee replacement prior to surgery as well as develop a surgical plan tailored to your unique anatomy.

During Surgery
On the day of your surgery, you will be taken to the operating room, where your surgeon will perform your robotic-assisted knee replacement. With the help of ROSA Knee's real-time information, your surgeon will remove the damaged bone, precisely place the knee implant, and assess the state of the soft tissues. Your surgeon will then finish your robotic-assisted total knee replacement by closing your incision.

After Surgery
Following your surgical procedure, you will start a personalized recovery plan that your orthopaedic doctor has created for you. Your doctor will also provide you with helpful information as well as go over guidelines to follow during your recovery period.

It is important to keep in mind that each total knee patient is unique, so your recovery time may vary. However, most patients are able to start driving after 2 weeks; do light activities, such as gardening, after 3 – 4 weeks; and return to some recreational activities, such as golf, after 6 – 8 weeks. Your doctor will let you know which activities you can start participating in again as your recovery progresses.
