Microdiscectomy With The Bone & Joint Center’s Dr. Alexander Riccio Helps Local Patient Reclaim Her Life & Return to Running
After debilitating back and leg pain forced her to stop running, local resident Kelly W. is back on the road—stronger, wiser, and deeply grateful for a second chance. Under the care of Dr. Alexander Riccio, a fellowship-trained spine surgeon, Kelly underwent a microdiscectomy that relieved the nerve compression that had taken away not only her mobility, but also the activity she loved most.
Kelly discovered running later in life, but when she did, she embraced it fully—training intensely seven days a week. "My leg hurt so badly," Kelly said. "I couldn’t sit, stand, walk or even lie down without agony. Something I loved so deeply was taken from me overnight.”
After physical therapy failed to bring relief, Kelly sought help from Dr. Riccio. He evaluated her symptoms, listened to her concerns and recommended a microdiscectomy to remove the damaged portion of a spinal disc that was pressing on her nerve.
The results were immediate. Within moments of waking from surgery, Kelly felt the relief she had been desperate for. Over the past 13 months, she has worked closely with Dr. Riccio and her care team to rebuild strength, refine her technique and return to running safely.
“Kelly’s determination was remarkable,” said Dr. Riccio. “With the right treatment and a thoughtful, gradual approach to recovery, she was able to return to the activity she loves while protecting her long-term spine health.”
While her journey has included setbacks and emotional hurdles, Kelly credits her progress to patience, persistence, and the guidance of her care team. “I am forever grateful,” she said. "This isn’t just a comeback. This is a second chance."
Kelly’s experience demonstrates Dr. Riccio’s focus on patient-centered spine care. Through specialized expertise and a full spectrum of advanced treatment options, his team is dedicated to helping patients recover function, reduce pain and return to the activities that matter most.
