About
Dr. Maxwell Alley is an orthopaedic surgeon who has completed advanced fellowship training in orthopaedic sports medicine. In addition to sports medicine, his expertise includes minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures and orthopaedic trauma care. He treats a wide range of complex musculoskeletal injuries in patients of all ages and activity levels, with a focus on restoring function, relieving pain, and helping individuals safely return to daily activities, work, or sports.
Dr. Alley earned his undergraduate degree from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont, and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Albany Medical College. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Boston University with clinical exposure at Boston Medical Center, the Lahey Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Boston Children's Hospital. He then pursued a fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. During his training, he gained extensive experience managing both routine and complex sports-related injuries, with a particular focus on articular cartilage restoration using a variety of surgical techniques.
Dr. Alley’s approach to care is patient-centered and evidence-based. He works closely with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan—surgical or nonoperative—tailored to their goals, lifestyle, and sport-specific needs. He believes in open communication, shared decision-making, and a collaborative, multidisciplinary approach that incorporates physical therapy, injury prevention strategies, and long-term joint health.
Dr. Alley comes from a family of orthopaedic surgeons and was inspired early on by his father, grandfather, and uncle, all of whom have practiced in the Capital District. His passion for orthopaedics was shaped by their legacy and reinforced throughout his training.
When he is not treating patients, Dr. Alley enjoys spending time with his family as well as playing golf, skiing, and fishing.
